Description

This course introduces the major stratigraphic sequences found throughout Europe and discusses the methodology used to correlate these and other global sequences. A small material study will be associated with this course giving students the opportunity to understand how these stratigraphic sequences are constructed and the ecological implications of our interpretations.
The course set-up involves a mini conference setting with specialists from abroad.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge of the stratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternary;

  • Learning about the different (bio)stratigraphical subdivisions and their scientific base;

  • Developing a critical attitude towards the way archaeological sites are dated and correlated with the Quaternary stratigraphic framework.

Ects distribution

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 7×2 hours of lectures;

  • 280 pages of literature;

  • Presentation.

Mode of instruction

Monitored self-instruction: to discuss, ask questions, and deliver an oral presentation on a theme, in a conference setting.

Assessment method

  • Participation in class;

  • Presentation (PowerPoint and oral delivery).

Assessment deadline

Assessment takes place during the mini conference.
