Linguistics 1: The Phonetics of English

Description

This course will take the form of an introduction to the phonetics of modern English. It will examine, amonst other matters, the production of speech, the description and classification of speech sounds, and how sounds are combined in speech and what influence they have upon each other. In the practical component of the course, attention will be paid to phonemic transcription.

Course objectives

Students get acquainted with the terminology needed in the study of phonetics; students learn the properties of English phonemes and how to describe them, both singly and in combinations; students learn the symbols needed to transcribe phonemically.

Mode of instruction

  • Lecture (1 hr per week)

  • Seminar (1 hr per week)

Assessment method

3 in-term quizzes (30%); 1 two-hour final written examination with closed and open questions (70%). If the in-term quiz average is lower than the written examination mark, only the latter will be taken into account
