Admission requirements
Linguistics 2 or similar
Description
This course considers the structure of modern English with the aid of a recent model of genrative syntax. We will examine a number of constructions in detail, and will also consider the changes that have taken place diachronically, by comparing the modern forms with their Early Modern English equivalents. We will include some discussion of other languages. The course may be relevant not only to those interested in syntax as such, but also for those taking Philology 6 (Shakespeare and Eraly Modern English).
Course objectives
Students learn some important concepts, aims and methods of theoretical linguistics. They are able to apply these to modern English. They also acquire some insight into earlier forms of the language.
