Admission requirements
Pass mark for Linguistics 5: Introduction to English Generative Syntax or equivalent.
Description
This course is a continuation of Linguistics 5. We will examine some other constructions in detail, and will also consider the properties that languages can have (including other languages than English), In addition, we will consider in what way generative theory provides an explanation for (im)possible language structures. The course may be relevant not only to those interested in syntax as such, but also for those interested in first and second language acquisition, or psycholinguisticstaking. The course is a preparation for the MA Linguistics.
Course objectives
Students learn some advanced concepts of generative linguistics. They are able to apply these to modern English. They also acquire some insight how theoretical linguistics can be used to explain language phenomena.
