A pass mark for Linguistics 5: The Phonology and Phonetics of English or similar course.
Description
This course is concerned with the description of phonological processes in English within the theory of government phonology as presented in Harris (1994). Particular attention will be paid to the structure of the syllable, which in this theory is drastically different from traditional approaches, and to the notion of phonological licensing, familiar from syntactic theories. Data from various dialects of British and American English will be discussed.
Course objectives
Students become acquainted with a particular theoretical approach to phonology, and apply this to English data.
