Description
Academic English for International Studies: Presenting
During this course students are introduced to academic presenting in English. They will study and train various aspects of giving academic presentations. They will learn to structure and signpost their presentations and will train to deal with questions. They will learn and practise all the strategies needed to enhance their fluency and confidence in presenting in English. After one introductory lecture on academic presenting, they will practice their skills in during 4 tutorials. The skills they practise will be used to deliver presentations during other courses in the study programme.
Academic English for International Studies: Writing
During this course students will learn to write specific academic texts with the help of their peers. The course will incorporate 4 lectures and 7 tutorials. Students will learn to use the correct reference, grammar and style to fulfil the demands and requirements of the Global Challenges course. They will learn how to use dictionaries and thesauruses with the help of an electronic toolbox in blackboard. Students will be able to use correct collocations, punctuation and word formations. They will learn to structure their thoughts in paragraph formatting. They will also learn to write introductions, discussions and conclusions of academic essays. They will learn to express themselves in a cohesive, coherent and logical way in order to signpost their audience. Students will also learn to write abstracts from their academic papers. They will be made aware of the dangers of plagiarism and will do some thorough training to avoid this issue.

Students who successfully complete this course will:

be able to use correct visual aids for their presentations;
be able to give peer feedback.
be able to use the appropriate style and language for the delivery of academic presentations.
Academic English for International Studies: Writing
Students who successfully complete this course will:
be able to structure and write an academic essay;
be able to use the correct register and style for academic essays;
be able to use M.L.A. and/or A.P.A. referencing and footnotes correctly;
be able to give peer feedback.

Assessment method
Academic English for International Studies: Presenting
Assessment will take place via a number of in-class exercises during the tutorial sessions. attendance also counts towards the final grade.
Academic English for International Studies: Writing
Tutorials will form the main body of this course.
Students will prepare for these tutorials by writing and rewriting drafts their essay for peer reviewing.
In class, students will be working together on several grammatical issues as well as on issues concerning register, collocations, numbers, graphs, statistics and captions.
A blackboard site will support the course, hosting a toolbox, course outline, assignments and assessment.
At the end of the course students will hand in a final version of their essay which will be graded.
