Description

Contact linguistics is the study of the effect of language contact on the forms and structures of languages. In this course, language contact will be studied from a number of perspectives:

  • contact induced change and the take-over of lingusitic materials – language simplification because of language contact (creoles, pidgins…) – language mixing – mixed codes of language use

Course objectives

The course aims at providing the students with a good background in the main issues in contact linguistics.

Mode of instruction

2-hour weekly seminar

Assessment method

A written paper at the end of the course. Students will also give presentations and discuss readings. Their performance will influence the overall grade for the course
