This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies.
Description
This course teaches students Korean for everyday communication through the study of 1) grammar and vocabulary, 2) speaking and listening, and 3) reading and writing skills. Specific attention will be given to pronunciation and spelling of the Korean alphabet. Furthermore, characteristic aspects of the Korean language such as politeness and register will be dealt with.
Course objectives
The course objectives for this course are as follows.
-Gaining knowledge of basic (A1 level) Korean grammar, phonetic structure, and spelling.
-Being able to apply the above knowledge to produce basic Korean sentences in written and spoken form, and being able to read basic texts and listen to simple conversations.
-Creating an awareness of the cultural characteristics of the Korean language as compared to the student’s native language

Mode of instruction
Three two hour seminars every week
Assessment method
Students in this course will be assessed through the following methods.
-In-class participation 20% (ongoing)
-Reading/vocabulary/grammar/creative writing 40% (written exam, week 8/16)
-Listening 20% (comprehension exam, Week 7/15)
-Speaking 20% (oral exam, week 7/15)
