Linguistics 5: Introduction to English Generative Syntax

Admission requirements

Linguistics 2 or equivalent must have been successfully completed.

Description

This course studies the syntax of present-day English. We will try to explain the properties of a number of syntactic constructions on the basis of several important descriptive methods and theoretical concepts of generative linguistics. We will make use of ‘real-life’ examples from a number of English media sources, including newspapers, books and television programmes.

Course objectives

  • Students have the ability to analyse syntactic structure and to formulate syntactic arguments, both written and orally.

  • Students know important descriptive methods and theoretical concepts of generative syntax.

  • Students know a number of theoretical proposals for the syntax of English.

  • written exam (combination of closed questions and essay questions) (70%)
