Successful completion of Literature 1A, 1B, 2 and 3 or equivalent.
Description
This course is a general introduction to the work of William Shakespeare. We will study the following plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream; King Lear; Measure for Measure; The Winter’s Tale; Antony & Cleopatra; The Tempest; 1 Henry IV; II Henry IV. We’ll look at Shakespeare’s use of language, dramatic structure and genre conventions and read his work in the light of the cultural and historical contexts to which they responded and which they helped to shape in their turn.
Course objectives
By the end of the course students will have gained a good basic knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays. They are able to analyse the form and language and genre characteristics of these plays and to relate them to their cultural and historical context. They will also have gained insight into the history of Shakespeare criticism and will have further developed their academic writing skills.
