Pragmatism

Course
2013-2014

Admission requirements

Description

Pragmatists like Charles Peirce and William James present ideas that have been part of the western tradition at least since Aristotle. Notions like belief and knowledge, which are generally conceived as dispositional states, are to be explained in terms of acts of assertion and acts of knowing in this tradition. Modern philosophy can profit from studying the pragmatist tradition in its conception of truth, knowledge, belief and thought.
During the course we will read texts from, for example, Aristotle, Peirce, Wittgenstein, John Searle, Robert Brandom, and Per Martin-Löf.
