Course description
In this course students are introduced to a number of recurring themes in current-affairs in the media in Modern Standard Arabic. For the reading and vocabulary portion, the textbook “Media Arabic, A coursebook for reading Arabic news” is used. For listening and discussion, materials are selected by the instructor and is made available via BlackBoard.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to read short texts from current-affair pages in Arabic written and listen to current affair news-related broadcast media, identify the main ideas and key details. They will show familiarity with vocabulary and grammar structures related to demonstrations, elections, violence and terrorism, etc.

Seminar with mandatory attendance.
Course load
Classroom lectures: 52 hrs.
Preparation and homework: 80 hrs.
Test preparation: 8 hrs.
Total course load: 140 hrs (5 ECs).
Assessment method
Assessment will be based on the following criteria:
Midterm: 30%
Quizzes: 20%
Final Exam: 50%
Students who have taken both the final exam and the midterm and receive a failing grade for the course will be allowed to take a resit exam that is equivalent to 50% of the course grade.
