Admission requirements
Previous knowledge of Indo-European linguistics, of Ancient Greek, of Greek Historical Phonology, and reading proficiency in German.
Description
This course starts with a survey of the historical morphology of Ancient Greek: the origin of the different types of nominal inflection, the history of the pronouns and particles, the prehistory of the verbal system, with its tenses, moods, and personal endings. Also, derivational word formation in nouns and verbs will be discussed.
The main focus will be on Homeric Greek, though obviously differences between Ancient Greek dialects, and between texts from different periods, including Myceanaean Greek, will play a major role in the course.
At the end of the course, the student will write a research paper dealing with a topic discussed in class, or a related theme.
Course objectives
1) Insight into the morphological structure of Ancient Greek, including its internal variation in time and space (dialects).
2) Knowledge of developments which led from Proto-Indo-European to the attested morphological categories and expressions in Ancient Greek.

Mode of instruction
Students are expected to attend the weekly seminars of the BA course Greek Historical Morphology (5513VHIG2W).
Reading list on the historical grammar of Greek and its Indo-European roots.
A one-hour weekly tutorial in order to discuss the additional reading.
Course Load
time spent on attending seminars and tutorials: 39 hours
time preparation of the classes: 91 hours
time to prepare for the final paper: 150 hours
Assessment Method
1) Written exam at the end of the course 40%
2) A research paper on a diachronic aspect of the morphology of Ancient Greek 60%
Resit: students who fail the course may resit the exam and/or final paper.
