Description
The number of museums focussing exclusively on collecting and exhibiting the art of sculpture is limited and such museums have a unique place in the international museum landscape. Often sculpture museums originated from a private collection and in many cases the main focus is on modern and contemporary art, which has consequences for the construction and interior of the museum building. Another characteristic of these museums is that they are often a place where scientific and scholarly research takes place.
The objectives of this seminar is to characterise these international sculpture museums and to identify similarities and differences. After this we will pose the question whether it is essential that these sculpture museums maintain an identity of their own: to what extent is ‘sculpture’ a label that justifies claiming a private niche in the cultural heritage domain.
Course Objectives
Kennis hebben van een selectie in beeldhouwkunst gespecialiseerde kunstmusea en de (twintigste eeuwse) beeldhouwkunst die daar gepresenteerd wordt visueel kunnen analyseren.
Inzicht hebben in hoe (beeldhouw-)collecties tot stand komen en hoe deze toegankelijk worden gemaakt voor specifieke doelgroepen.
Kunnen omgaan met bronnen en literatuur op het gebied van de (inter)nationale beeldhouwkunst.
In staat zijn om over de receptie van beeldhouwkunt in een land een beredeneerd oordeel te formuleren.Een presentatie van 15 minuten over de eigen onderzoeksbevindingen kunnen voorbereiden en presenteren en effectief kunnen reageren op vragen en opmerkingen van docent en medestudenten.
Een gestructureerd betoog kunnen schrijven van circa 3000 woorden, exclusief noten en bibliografie, vanuit een compacte en weloverdachte probleemstelling.

Draft timetable: 6x on Wednesdays 13.00 – 17.00 hrs (11/2, 25/2, 11/3, 8/4, 22/4 and 6/5 2015). Location: Museum Beelden Aan Zee.

Mode of instruction
Seminar, combined with practical research at the museum: Beelden aan Zee.
Er is bij werkcolleges aanwezigheidsplicht. Verzuim door omstandigheden dient vooraf te worden gemeld, met opgaaf van redenen. Bovendien geldt dat de cursus niet succesvol kan worden afgesloten wanneer de student meer dan 2x afwezig is geweest. Bij in gebreke blijven kan de toegang tot het college verder worden ontzegd. Alleen in uitzonderlijke gevallen zal de Examencommissie de mogelijkheid van een aanvullende of vervangende opdracht overwegen. (Zie ook het OER.)
