Description
Students need to do a mandatory internship of 10 credits. In four specialisations, as mentioned below, students can extend the internship to 20 credits if they do a clinical internship. There are various ways to fulfil an internship. Most students find an internship of their choice in a professional institution in the region. The internship coordinator of the specialisation may have a list of addresses of institutions that have offered internships in the past.
Within the professional institution, a qualified staff member will be responsible for the daily supervision of the student. In most cases, an internship contract has to be signed by the student, a staff member in the professional institution and the internship coordinator of the specialisation in order to formally describe the mutual agreement about the internship requirements.
Some students prefer to do their internship within the university setting, for instance by participating in an ongoing research project or by teaching bachelor students in a training course on interpersonal and professional skills.
In all cases, a staff member of the university will supervise the internship on an individual basis or in group meetings. This university staff member is responsible for the grading of the internship. As part of the intake procedure of the internship within the university, the university staff member will make clear the criteria for his or her final assessment of the internship.
An internship in a Dutch professional institution is only available for students who master the Dutch language sufficiently. International students are strongly advised to look for possibilities for internships in their home country or in an English speaking country. Internships for English speaking students in the Netherlands are very scarce. The internship coordinator of the specialisation cannot guarantee the availability of professional internships. Students of the Master specialisations Clinical Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Health Psychology and Child and Adolescent Psychology can extend their internship to an Clinical Internship of 20 credits. In this way they can practise professional skills and optimize their career opportunities and for Dutch students their chances of application for a postmaster training in Heath Care (post-master training). As part of such an internship of 20 credits, the subject “Organisational, Juridical and Ethical Aspects of Health Care” has to be addressed as part of the final report on the internship.
Students of the Master specialisations Clinical Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Health Psychology and Child and Adolescent Psychology can apply for supervision on psycho diagnostic cases during their internship to obtain the Basis Aantekening Psychodiagnostiek (Basic Qualification in Psycho Diagnostics), a Dutch registration of the Dutch Association of Psychologists. The supervision on psycho diagnostic cases starts preferably during the internship but has to start within a month after the ending of the internship and while the student is still enrolled in the university. Course objectives
In the internship, students learn to:
apply their knowledge, understanding and problem solving abilities in a new and unfamiliar task environment within a broader (or multi-disciplinary) context related to their field of specialisation.
integrate knowledge and handle complexity by formulating judgements with incomplete or limited information. These judgments should reflect social and ethical responsibilities.
The internship also provides students an opportunity to learn how to communicate their judgements (and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these judgments) clearly and unambiguously to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Assessment method
The student writes an internship report. Assessment by a university staff member and, if applicable, by the daily supervisor in the institute where the internship has taken place. The final assessment is by the university staff member based on a set of evaluation criteria specific for the Master specialisation of the student.
For the Clinical Internship of 20 EC the student has to address ethical, organizational and legal aspects of health care in his or her internship report. Information on this can be found in the Manual for Clinical Internship on the respective pages on Blackboard of the specialisations.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has instituted that instructors use a software programme for the systematic detection of plagiarism in students’ written work. In case of fraud disciplinary actions will be taken. Please see the information concerning fraud.
