Description
This course focuses on the main economic, political, social, and cultural factors which can help to explain the recent empowerment of Brazil’s position in the world scene. It offers a critical view of several domestic obstacles (such as the existence of great social inequalities, lack of probity by state institutions, declining levels of economic growth, and the like) which could jeopardize the consolidation of the new achieved world status. Also attention is paid to the relation of Brazil with the rest of the Latin American nations, as well as the growing cooperation Brazil is having with other emerging economies such as Russia, India and China (within the framework of the BRICS).
Course objectives
To obtain knowledge and understanding about the complex interplay between economic, political and social factors and the ways the influence each other at large-scale processes of development and modernization.
To get insight in the main cultural changes that have been generated by the new international position reached by Brazil and their impact on the country’s self-image.
