Description

Elementary Russian is a Russian language course for students with knowledge of the language on A1 level of CEFR. The course will provide students with further knowledge of Russian grammar and vocabulary usage (idiomatic approach) and aims to further develop language skills in grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing. An important aspect of the course will be the cultural knowledge about Russia. The course provides the knowledge to communicate and understand Russian at A2-B1.

Course objectives

The required competences for a A2-B1 level language can be described as follows:

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

  • Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need

Mode of instruction

The course is taught through seminars, in which students will gain knowledge of Russian grammar and vocabulary and practice reading, writing, speaking and listening skills during the classes. Students will be asked to prepare presentations on treated topics, complete assignments and participate in discussions and debates. Beside theoretical part of language learning, students will learn about contemporary Russia by movies, music and arts. When possible, excursions will be organized to i.e. Russian embassy, museums, Russian cinema etc.

Students are expected to work individually as well as in groups. Sometimes they will be asked to complete home assignments in small groups.

Assessment

The final grade consist of assignments and exams that count towards it.

2x Listening exam, 15 %, week 4 and 12
2x Reading exam, 20%, week 5 and 15
2x Presentation, 20%, week 5 and 13
2x Grammar, 25 %, week 6 and 16
2x Essay, 10 %, submit through Turnitin

There will be a Blackboard site available for this course. Students will be enrolled at least one week before the start of classes.
