Description

This pre-intermediate Portuguese language course builds on the written and oral communication skills developed over the course of Portuguese I. Topics concerning the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world in global context are integrated into language learning through an interactive programme of language acquisition.

Course objectives

This course covers four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, to a pre-intermediate level. Course-book and other additional, including authentic materials will be used in the development of communication skills through practical written and oral exercises (individual and group-based). The course will expand students knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and awareness of register. Students will develop key skills, such as presentation skills in Portuguese, team work, working to deadlines. These are integrated into language-specific, practical application of language skills in a variety of contexts, such as CV and covering letter writing.

Target level for Portuguese Pre-intermediate in terms of the Common European framework:
Listening – B1
Reading – B1
Speaking A2/B1
Writing A2/B1

Mode of instruction

This course consists in tutorials meetings based on communication and interaction.
Using the material previously provided by the tutor, students are required to study the grammar and vocabulary before the tutorials, where they will practice speaking and listening in a series of interactive activities.

Course Load

Three tutorials of two hours each per week.

  • Total course load: 280 hours (10 EC)

  • Attending classes: 72 hours (6 h per week over 12 weeks)

  • Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 208 hours

Assessment method

Written assessments:
Written Exam 1 (15%) (1-2 hours)
Written Exam 2 (Mid-term) (20%) (1-2 hours)
Written Exam 3 (15%) (1-2 hours)
Written Exam 4 (Final) (20%) (1-2 hours)
Assignments (10%) (1-2 hours)
Oral assessments:
Oral Exam (Final) (20%) (7-15 minutes)

Written exams include linguistic exercises, written comprehension, listening comprehension, and short essay.
Oral assessment consists of a question/answer session.

Remarks

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. Minimum 70% attendance required. When failing to attend the minimum of attendance required, students must complete an extra assignment in order to sit for final exams. Passing this course is an additional requirement for a positive Study Recommendation at the end of the year.
