Field school 2

Course
2016-2017

Admission requirements

For excavations abroad: propedeuse (first year) Archaeology obtained.

For excavations in the Netherlands: Veldpracticum 1 / Field school 1 obtained.

Possibly, additional preparation will be necessary, depending on the details of the placement: language study, relevant supporting discipline.

Description

In Field school 2, Field school 1 is advanced by means of faculty fieldwork of 5 ects, being 17 work days. During the field school, practical skills are learned IN the field. These could include excavation, surveying, drilling and the field recording related to these. In the Bachelor’s course, all the faculty fieldwork comes within the field school.
Although the student may make their own choice from the various fieldwork projects available, it is ensured that the combination of practical skills (field schools and internship) together deliver sufficient diversity in order to give the student sufficient skills in different fields after graduation.

The length of the placement is at least 17 days (5 ects), but may comprise multiple shorter placements. A placement that lasts longer than 17 day is however only counted as 5 ects – the other ects may be stated on the diploma as extracurricular activities. This is to ensure that a student does not concentrate his/her fieldwork too one-sidedly and thus reduces his/her chances in employment.
A fieldwork or placement agreement must be completed beforehand. For detailed information about this agreement and all matters concerning fieldwork and placements, please see the Placement Regulations on our website.
Enrol yourself in the BlackBoard module to stay informed about placements on offer.
For more information about Field School 2, please contact the coordinator, dr Driessen, or the regional coordinators directly – they can advise you in detail about regional fieldwork and look over the individual reports:

Regional coordinators:

Please note: fieldwork may only be done outside the normal class periods and there is no retake. Reports may indeed be improved, provided the first version is submitted within the deadline.
If you do not pass the fieldwork, you must retake the missed part the following year. See also the test policy of the Archaeology course.
