Description
People’s diets provide a large source of information about their way of life. The availability of food does not always determine a population’s diet; cultural traditions can play a role as well. Changes in diet may indicate changes in people’s surroundings, or cultural developments.
This course will delve into the many methods used to determine palaeodiet, and it will present dietary data from different time periods and regions.
Course objectives
Knowledge of (palaeo)diet reconstruction methods and their applications;
Acquaintance with the many aspects of palaeodiet;
Acquaintance with the theories regarding the role of diet in human evolution.

Lectures.
Course load
The course load will be distributed as follows:
7 × 2 hours of lectures (1 ects);
Ca. 240 pages of literature (2 ects);
Paper (2 ects).
Assessment method
Paper on one of the techniques addressed in the cast studies, including finding additional literature.
Reading list
The reading list will be distributed during class.
