Admission for credit is open to bachelor students. Master students may follow the course as a certificate programme.
Description
The elective course ‘Introduction to Turkish Law’ consists of general introductions in various domains of Turkish law. Domains selected differ per year, but may include constitutional law, private law, criminal law, administrative law, tax law, labour law and legal history. The course is taught at Leiden Law School by lecturers of İstanbul University. The course is taught in Turkish, which brings with it that command of the Turkish language is a requirement. Both bachelor and master students may participate, however elective course credit (5 EC) is only available at bachelor level. Those who do not require credit may follow the course as a certificate programme.
The Course will consist of 4 weeks of bi-weekly lectures. Lectures will take place on Thursdays and Fridays.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with relevant backgrounds with an introduction to Turkish law and make them aware of their own potential for comparative advantage as cross-border lawyers and jurists. Participating students can follow the course to develop a basic knowledge basis in relation to domains of positive Turkish Law, and/or opt to develop that basis by participating in further editions of this course or, other connected course programmes.
Achievement levels
The following achievement levels apply for this course:
Students will develop a basic knowledge of various domains of positive Turkish Law
Students will gain comparative insight as to differences and relationships between Dutch, European and Turkish Law
Students will develop basic competencies in resolving comparative cross-border legal issues

Required preparation by students: Students will read relevant articles in academic journals. Students must submit a short summary of the materials before the lecture, as well as formulate two questions which they will ask during the lecture about the material.
