Advanced Korean Language Training: Reading

Admission requirements

MA Asia Studies students: Korea Studies (120 credits); East Asian Studies (60 credits) – Korea track; and others with sufficient Korean language skills (TOPIK level 4 or above).

Description

This course is designed for students who would like to develop advanced level of reading, writing, speaking and listening ability in various situations of society, politics, culture and history of Korea. Students will read and discuss various topics related to Korean culture and society during the class. This course will help students research and evaluate newspapers, magazines, webtoons, literary works, academic articles and advertisements. This course aims to meet what students want and need to learn various genre of Korean.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, the students who complete the course successfully should be able to

  • Comprehend, summarize, analyze and translate Korean texts

  • Improve reading skills and strategies

  • Be familiar with the current scholarly issues in Korea

  • Express their own opinions by using high-level vocabulary and formal expressions

  • Describe social political historical and cultural topics of Korea

  • Expand their Korean literacy and expertise through reading and writing

Course Load

Total workload 280 hours;

  • Contact hours: 4 hours x 13 weeks = 52 hours

  • Assignment preparation: 10 hours * 13 weeks = 130 hours

  • Oral presentations: 30 hours

  • Final Essay: 68 hours

Assessment method

  • Attendance: 5%

  • Participation and preparation: 10%

  • Individual oral presentation: 20%

  • Weekly writing assignments (critical review and article summary): 40%

  • Final essay (5,000 words): 25%

Students will be required to submit 5,000 words(3-4 pages long) essay in Korean until 24 December.
Please make sure your paper should be double-spaced, 11 point font, and 1-inch margins.

Resit

  • If your grade is below 6.0(5.49 and lower), you have 2 resit chances after the final.

  • Writing assignments and final paper submitted two or more weeks late will not be graded.

  • Students with insufficient achievement of the final paper need to resit.

  • If you make up all writing assignments and submit a revised final paper which meets lecturer’s feedback, you will be passed.

Remarks

As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance for all lectures and seminars is expected. Failure to attend results in a lower grade. If you do not attend more than three classes you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or paper may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason not to attend, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the coordinator of studies on this.
