Admission requirements

Basic knowledge of Indo-European reconstruction.

Description

The course is an introduction to Tocharian B, an ancient Indo-European language spoken in what is now western China until appr. 1000 AD. It is known from manuscripts found on the northern edge of the Taklamakan desert. The contents of the manuscripts are often of a Buddhist nature. The course will provide an overview of the grammar of Tocharian B and of the historical development of the language, including its hostorical phonology.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to read Tocharian B text in transcription with the help of a dictionary and he/she will be able to interpret Tocharian B data from an Indo-European perspective.

Resit: Students with a final grade of 5.0 or lower may take the resit.
