Description
Introduction to besic concepts of English semantics, concentrating mainly on lexical semantics. We will consider entailment, synonymy, hyponymy, antonymy, presupposition and modality, and introduce formal logic, thus creating a link to philosophy and pschychology.
Course objectives
students learn basic concepts of lexical (and some non-lexical) semantics
students can apply these concepts to English
students learn the position of semantics as a linguistic phenomenon within the more general study of the human mind

Mode of instruction
One 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour seminar per week.

Written exam and written paper.

Written exam with closed and open questions 70%

Resit
If the final grade is insufficient students may only resit the insufficient course component(s).
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
Attendance
Attendance is compulsory. Missing more than three tutorials means that students will be excluded from taking the exam (or essay or other assignments) and resits. Consequently, the course cannot be completed during that particular academic year. Unauthorized absence also applies to being unprepared and/or not bringing the relevant course materials to class.
