Admission requirements
Admission to the RMA Archaeology programme.
Description
Organised around ongoing research of the Near Eastern staff, this course will present you with evidence (architecture, material culture, etc.) from recent surveys and excavations in the desert regions of the Near East (in particular Jordan).
The course will take you into the practicalities of research, including data collection, methodology, and interpretation of the available archaeological record, and the preparation of a publication.
Course objectives
Detailed knowledge of the period, region, research problems, relevant literature, current debates and approaches concerning the theme of research;
Ability to critically assess current research and literature and to voice one’s well-argumented opinion;
Ability to process archaeological data and to apply relevant theoretical models;
Ability to present original research in an academic manner.

Mode of instruction
Lectures;
Reading of relevant books/articles;
Individual assignments;
Discussion on the basis of these assignments;
Preparation of joint report.
Course load
The course load will be distributed as follows:
7×2 hours of lectures (1 ec);
Written assignments, 2,000 words (1 ec);
140 pages of literature (1 ec);
24,5 days of research (7 ec).
Assessment method
Active participation in class discussions (15%);
Reading of assigned literature (15%);
Individual and joint research (35%);
Quality of written assignments on the basis of research (35%).
