Description
Students will spend a minimum of six weeks in Africa, working with a local partner on a topic of joint interest, but linked to the research field in which the student wants to specialise and continue with the Master’s thesis research. The local partners can be NGOs, CBOs, local or central government agencies, media, art or business agencies. Local partners can also be scientific institutes or think tanks. Students can spend an additional five weeks if the field assignment also provides the data they need for their final MA thesis.
The facilitative structure will be linked to the collaborative research group structure of the African Studies Centre, with additions from the Faculty of Humanities and possibly make use of the African Studies Centre Community
Course objectives
To experience working and living in Africa; to learn how to work within a project, organisation or research team; to learn how to work with and for a community; to acquire practical skills to bring a project to a fruitful end in a new and culturally different environment; to experience data collection in the field.
Mode of instruction
Practical work under supervision.
Assessment method
Assessment on the basis of the report by the local supervisor of the work carried out during the internship (50%) and the final report by the student (50%).
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
