Admission requirements
This course is an (extracurricular) Honours Class: an honours elective in the Honours College programme. There are limited spots available for non honours students. Admission will be based on motivation.

Description
There are many different contexts in which children are confronted with international migration. Children move, together or without their parents, to another country for reasons of work, study or to find international protection against violence. In all phases of the immigration process, minor migrants face certain challenges, but are also confronted with new opportunities. In this interdisciplinary course, guest speakers from various disciplines will be asked to reflect on the consequences of migration for minor children.
Topics that will be discussed during the honours class are: refugee children, unaccompanied minors, guardianship and alternative care, integration, education, (transnational) families and international adoption.
As jurists, our department offers a solid background in the legal regime regulating international migration. To provide a solid academic curriculum, we intend to invite a historian, a child psychologist, a pedagogist, an international relations specialist and a sociologist. Besides academic guest lecturers, we would like to organize a session or field trip in cooperation with the Dutch guardianship organization for unaccompanied minors NIDOS.
Course objectives
At the end of the summer school, the students have acquired better insight into the challenges and opportunities provided by international migration among minors.
The students become familiar with the interdisciplinary research domain through various international guest speakers with diverse academic backgrounds.
The students are able to present in groups to elaborate on different themes, introduced by the guest speakers, from an interdisciplinary prespective. The students can use the prescribed literature and apply different presentation techniques.
The students are able to contribute to the seminars and presentations from their own academic perspective.
At the end of the course, the students are able to write an academic paper under supervision.
