Statistics for Linguists

Admission requirements

High school ‘Math C’ at ‘VWO’ level (Dutch education system) or equivalent is assumed.
This course is only for students of the BA Linguistics and students of the minor Second Language Acquisition. Other students cannot participate.

Description

This course covers basic descriptive and inferential statistics aimed at linguistics research for BA students linguistics. Methods for quantitative data analysis in (experimental) linguistics will be covered such as t-tests, analysis of variance, regression analysis and analysis of cross-tabs.

Course objectives

Learning goal 1: able to apply basic concepts from descriptibe and inferential statistics
Learning goal 2: able to perform statistical procedures using statistical analysis software (SPSS)
Leanring goal 3: able to correctly report results from statistical analyses

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures and practicals

  • Attendance of lectures/practicals is obligatory, unless the student contacts the lecturer before the start of the course and can provide convincing arguments to be absent. All other students will be removed from the course if one is absent more than 2 sessions. Non-attedance results in losing the right to ask questions about that topic.

Timely handing in weekly assignments is obligatory. If more than 1 assignment is handed in too late (or the assignment does not appear to reflect a serious effort), the student loses the right to take part in the examination (parctical exam + exams). Handing in a weekly assignment too late, results in losing the right to receive feedback on that assignment.

Active participation and self monitoring on the part of the student is expected.

Resit

All components can bes resited.

Both exams and the practical test need to be at least 55% (after correction for guessing) to pass.
