Description
This course will take the form of an introduction to the phonetics of modern English. It will examine, amongst other matters, the production of speech, the description and classification of speech sounds, and how sounds are combined in speech and what influence they have upon each other. In the practical component of the course, attention will be paid to phonemic transcription.
Course objectives
Students:
become acquainted with the terminology needed in the study of phonetics;
learn the properties of English phonemes and how to describe them, both singly and in combination;
learn the symbols needed to transcribe phonemically.

Mode of instruction
Lecture (1 hour per week) and seminar (2 hours per week)
Course Load
time spent on attending lectures and seminars: 39 hours
time for studying the compulsory literature: 39 hours
time to prepare for the exam and in-term quizzes: 54 hours
exam/quizzes: 4 hours
Tutoring/opportunity to inspect exam: 4 hours.

Three in-term quizzes and a written exam.
Weighing
Three in-term quizzes (30%)
Written exam (70%)
If the in-term quiz average is lower than the written examination mark, only the latter will be taken into account (100%).
Resit
If the final grade is 5 or less students may take the resit once and the mark of the resit will constitute 100% of the final grade.
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
Attendance
Attendance is compulsory. Missing more than two tutorials means that students will be excluded from the tutorials. Unauthorized absence also applies to being unprepared, not participating and/or not bringing the relevant course materials to class..
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used to provide students with an overview of current affairs, as well as specific information about (components of) the course.
