A pass mark for Linguistics 1 and Linguistics 2 or equivalent.
Description
This course is concerned with the relationship between phonetic and phonological structure in English, building on the material considered in Linguistics 1: The Phonetics of English. The focus of the course will be on the internal structure of speech sounds, on the phonological organisation of these sounds into syllables and on the relationship between phonology and the structure of morphologically complex words.
Course objectives
Students are acquainted with the allophonic properties of English speech sounds.
Students have a basic knowledge of the phonological representation of segments and syllables, and of segmental processes such as assimilation.
Students have insight into the relationship between phonology and the structure of morphologically complex words.

Assessment method
Assessment
Mid-term written assignment, in-term quiz and end-of-term exam.
Weighing
Mid-term written assignment: 15%
In-term quiz: 15%
End-of-term exam (70%)
If the quiz mark is lower than the exam mark, the quiz mark will not be taken into account and the exam mark will count towards 85% of the final mark (the assignment counts towards 15% of the final mark).
A minimum mark of 5.5 for the written assignment and the exam.
Resit
There is no resit for the in-term quiz. The end-of-term exam and mid-term written assignment can be retaken if one or both grades are below a 5.5
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
Attendance
Attendance is compulsory. Missing more than two tutorials means that students will be excluded from the tutorials. Unauthorized absence also applies to being unprepared, not participating and/or not bringing the relevant course materials to class.

The first edition of this book (1999) is out of date and is not compatible with the second edition.
