Description
Syntax is the study of sentential structure. Students are first introduced to the most important terms and concepts within the study of syntax. After getting acquainted with the diagnostic tests to distinguish word classes and grammatical categories, we turn to constituent structure, simplex and complex sentences (including relative clauses). We bring in data from different languages (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Malagasy, Welsh and Yoruba) to help us tackle different syntactic phenomena such as passives, causatives and applicatives, as well as various processes in language.
Course objectives
Students get acquainted with basic syntactic phenomena.
Students appreciate fundamental syntactic differences between various languages.
Students acquire the fundamental theoretical insights of syntactic structure.
