Historical Grammar of Greek 1

Description

This course gives an overview of the historical morphology of Ancient Greek: the different declension types and their origins, the reconstruction of pronouns, and the prehistory of the Greek verb with its complicated system of tense-/aspect stems, modes and voices, and endings. Attention will also be paid to productive derivational processes with nominal and verbal stems. The emphasis is on the morphological categories of Homeric Greek and the Ionic-Attic dialects, but other dialectal varieties (including Mycenaean) are also taken into account.
Secondly, and at the same time, this course offers an introduction to the language of Homeric epic (translating, metrics, morphology). We will read about 100 lines of the Iliad, paying attention to the differences between Homeric and Attic Greek and the various dialectal layers in the epic language.
