Description
This course gives an overview of the most important theories of performance, performativity and theatricality as developed in theater studies and critical theory. We will look at classic theories of theatre and performance studies, ranging from Hans-Thies Lehmann to Richard Schechner and Peggy Phelan, as well as theories of performativity developed in gender studies, speech act theory, queer theory and cultural theory.

Students have acquired
An overview of the fields of theatrical theory and performance studies
Insight in the various approaches to theater and performance
Are familiar with key concepts in performance studies and van use these concepts in analyses of a wide range of cultural situations.
