Description
Practising International Studies is an academic collaborative project course where teams of students reflect and analyse societal issues presented by organisational partners that operate in international environments. These leaders appeal to student teams to use their area-specific and multidisciplinary background in International Studies as well as their research capabilities to provide them with novel and critical insights to assist their future decision-making.
This course teaches students to merge their International Studies background in practice. Students learn to, conduct holistic research using their multidisciplinary grounding, that is, historical, cultural, economic and political—as taught from a Humanities perspective, and area expertise, to finally balance globalisation and contextualization to further progress on contemporary societal challenges.
Course objectives
This course aims to:
apply theories, concepts and ideas from International Studies as practical tools of critical reflection and analysis (bridging the theory-practice gap);
equip students with the tools to engage with the challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world as encountered by international organisations;
further develop research skills such as problem formulation; collect, select, analyse and represent academic literature, formulate research questions and apply research methods, e.g. case-based research;
build the ability to critically assess and solve complex cases of international organisations to the benefit of society;
receive and give feedback to peers and incorporate feedback from research coaches;
build teamwork competencies, the ability to brainstorm, listen, debate and integrate perspectives through group work and collaboration;
further build skills to write, present and defend research findings in a professional and structured way;
expose students to the complexities and challenges faced by organisations and their leaders thereby advancing research of societal relevance;

Mode of instruction
(Guest-) Lectures, project tutorials, workshops, presentations.
All sessions are mandatory. For teams to function effectively, all student consultants should be actively involved in all the components of the course and contribute to group discussions to be represented in the decision-making process and consultancy deliverables. Make sure you inform both your team and your coach if you cannot make it for a good reason.
Assessment method
The course is assessed through a combination of individual and group assessment of a series of components and deliverables, such as participation, team agreement, project plan, individual report, final report and final presentation.
