Description

Introduction to Middle Welsh from a historical-comparative perspective, i.e. in comparison with the other Celtic and Indo-European languages. The first part of the course treats the phonology and morphology of Middle Welsh, and sketches its evolution from Proto-Indo-Europrean. During the second part we read a famous Middle Welsh text.

Course objectives

  • Good understanding of the linguistic structure of Middle Welsh

  • Elementary reading skills

  • Understanding of the position of Middle Welsh within the Celtic languages and within the Indo-European language family

Course Load

  • 5 ECTS = 140 hours, of which 28 hours of classes, 68 hours preparation, 44 hours for preparing the exam, 2 hours for the exam. No intermediate exam.

  • Exam: 2 hours

Students are entitled to view their marked examination within a period of 30 days, following publication of the results of a written examination.
