Archaeology: Prehistory of North-Western Europe

This specialisation is part of the Master’s programme of Archaeology.

The specialisation Prehistory of North-Western Europe discusses various approaches to archaeological data ranging from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. On the basis of recent articles and key-publications students are taught how to use concepts such as exchange, cultural identity, and the biography of objects in the interpretation of data. These data are related to large research projects of the chair group European Prehistory focusing on barrow landscapes, on Early Iron Age ‘elite’ burials, on Bronze Age farming in coastal environments and on Beaker Cultures. These projects also form the framework for many theses that students write within this specialisation. A fieldtrip to discuss sites in their setting is part of the programme.
