Description
This is a brand new courses intended as a foundation for a new MSc specialization on the Physics of Classical and Quantum Information.
Many concepts in physics, specifically the statistical mechanics underpinning of thermodynamics, have proven to have a wider applicability in the science of information. Conversely, the recent excitement about the viable pursuit of the quantum computer has given new insights onto quantum physics using the science of information developed in classical computer science. This course explores this interplay between these two fields as a foundation and a broader background for other courses exploring the physics of information.
Course Expectations and Evaluation
The course will consist of three parts:
The first part of the course will consist of a set of conventional lectures and (graded) assignments;
The second part of the course will consist of a set of indepedent research projects with a written report and presentations by the students;
The third part will be a set of guest lectures (interspersed in the second part).
The final course grade will be determined from
Graded assignments (50%)
Project Presentation (20%)
Project report (30%)
