Admission requirements

Assumed/Recommended prior knowledge

None.

Description

The course will introduce basic principles and theories of human learning. It will teach you how to design a conceptual model combining variables of human learning, variations of media/ict design and also how to measure effects and learning outcomes. Furthermore, it will demonstrate the current approaches in Learning Analytics, Mobile Learning, Game-based Learning, Gamification of Learning, AI in Education, and Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality for Learning.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, students are able to:

  • describe process of human learning, cognitive processs underlying learning, as also motivational aspects of learning;

  • differentiate 5 different learning technologies and define their special affordances for human learning and education;

  • design a conceptual model of linking design variations or technologies with effects on learning outcomes;

  • compose a technology enhanced educational or learning setting and formulate hypotheses about the effects of enhancements on human learning outcomes; and

  • identify a problem, design a solution based on the presented approaches, and implement their own educational technology solution.

Timetable

The most recent timetable can be found at the Computer Science (MSc) student website.

You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.

MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

For more information, watch the video or go the the 'help-page' in MyTimetable. Please note: Joint Degree students Leiden/Delft have to merge their two different timetables into one. This video explains how to do this.

Mode of instruction

Lectures with Lab and final project work in groups.

Assessment method

The work progress will be assesed with weekly peer reviews. In these peer reviews the students will write a reflection paragraph related to the topic of the lecture of about 150-250 words. The students will then review and assess 3 other peers reflections and write feedback for those. There will be 5 peer reviews of which at least 3 must be completed to successfully complete the course.

For the final project there will be a poster session in which the students will present their project to the peers and a 3-5 teachers who will review the posters on a given rubric (conceptual clarity, technology orchestration, effect expectations, as also design/presentation), the grade of the poster will be 30% of the final grade.

The final project will be a report based on a given structure. The report is evaluated on a given rubric (background, theory, design and development, evaluation, overall writing and performance). The grade on the final report will be 70% of the final grade.

Registration

From the academic year 2022-2023 on every student has to register for courses with the new enrollment tool MyStudyMap. There are two registration periods per year: registration for the fall semester opens in July and registration for the spring semester opens in December. Please see this page for more information.

Please note that it is compulsory to both preregister and confirm your participation for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course. Confirming your exam participation is possible until ten days before the exam.
