This course is only open to students of the Legal Track (LL.M.) of the LDE Master on the Governance of Migration and Diversity, sub-track to European law LL.M.
Description
This course studies the governance of migration and diversity from a longitudinal perspective and within the context of large-scale developments. How do past migration patterns, as well as attempts to manage migration, differ from present day migration and migration governance. How has past migration influenced and changed societies? What lessons can be learnt from the past?
Course objectives
Objectives of the course
The aim of this course is to analyse how, when and why societies changed because of migration, and how migration changed because of changes in society.
The following achievement levels apply with regard to the course:
The ability to employ an interdisciplinary approach (application of theories and methods from social sciences)
The ability to study migration from a comparative perspective (diachronic and synchronic)
The ability to work with a large variety of primary sources

Mode of instruction
Seminars
- Seminar (compulsory attendance)
This means that students have to attend every session of the course. If a student is not able to attend, the student is required to notify the teacher beforehand. The teacher will determine if and how the missed session can be compensated by an additional assignment.
Assessment method
Examination form(s)
Written paper: 70%
Oral presentation: 20%
Class participation: 10%
The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average with the additional requirement that the written paper must always be sufficient.

Areas to be tested within the exam
The examination syllabus consists of the required reading (literature) for the course, the course information guide and the subjects taught in the lectures, the seminars and all other instructions which are part of the course.
