Science Communication and Society Project Proposal

Vak
2024-2025

Admission requirements

Students who want to do an SCS internship are required to follow the Science Communication and Society courses first.

The SCS Project Proposal is a required assignment for students who are following the SCS specialisation. Before they are allowed to start their science communication research (minimum of 10 EC) as part of their internship, they need to have their research proposal approved. See SCS Internship for more information about the internship.

Please apply for the SCS specialisation through this registration form.

Description

The project proposal is structured according to the classic structure of a research proposal:

  • Introduction (including relevance, a literature overview that will position your subject in the research field and provides a theoretical framework and research gap)

  • Research question and hypothesis

  • Method (including a description of the research setting, participants, data collection and data analysis. It contains a clear description about if and how personal information is handled)

  • Planning (realistic and detailed)

  • References

Course Objectives

After completion of Science Communication and Society Project Proposal students are able to:

  • Identify a research gap within the field of Science Communication and formulate a research question based on an extensive literature search.

  • Write a literature review that gives an overview of the science communication subfield, provide a theoretical framework that highlights the added value of studying the particular constructs of their own research, and detail the relevance of the proposed study.

  • Decide on a suitable research method to answer their research question and being able to explain why this would fit their research best, based on previous literature.

  • Design and maintain a realistic and detailed planning for their internship.

Timetable

Writing the research proposal needs to be done in the first 4 weeks of the research internship.

In MyTimetable, you can find all course and programme schedules, allowing you to create your personal timetable. Activities for which you have enrolled via MyStudyMap will automatically appear in your timetable.

Additionally, you can easily link MyTimetable to a calendar app on your phone, and schedule changes will be automatically updated in your calendar. You can also choose to receive email notifications about schedule changes. You can enable notifications in Settings after logging in.

Questions? Watch the video, read the instructions, or contact the ISSC helpdesk.

Note: Joint Degree students from Leiden/Delft need to combine information from both the Leiden and Delft MyTimetables to see a complete schedule. This video explains how to do it.

Mode of Instruction

Self-study

Assessment Method

The student will receive 3 EC for the research proposal, graded with either a V (passing grade) or an O (non-passing grade). Students can only continue their research if they have received a passing grade for their proposal.
