Description

The course provides students with an overwiev of the challenges in healthcare regarding sustainiblity for care, health, humans.

This course will address 3 learning goals.

  1. Students understand the concept of health(care) and general mechanics of anatomy, physiology and diseases

To be able to understand the challenges in healthcare, students must have basic knowledge on human anatomy and physiology and disease. Furthermore, students understand the concept of ageing on the human body. This knowledge is used to explain the different definitions of health which are used by different cultures. Students understand the broad outlines of clinical thinking of physicians and what is required to diagnose and treat a disease. This requires basic knowledge of epidemiology.

  1. Students understand sustainability in healthcare and its challenges (namely, among other things: financial restraints, workforce, ageing population, sedentary lifestyle/fast food, working in silo’s).

Healthcare (industry) is a major contributor to climate change through CO2-emissions and use of resources. Students need to understand how healthcare contributes to climate change and what can be done to reduces this contribution.
Healthcare systems are facing a lot of challenge the next decade. There is a shortage of workforce, financial deficits, sedentary lifestyle, ageing population and increasing multimorbidity. To sustain a high quality of care, it is inevitable to make choices in healthcare and choose for a more holistic approach. The students need be able to understand and to analyse these challenges. Also, students can connect these challenges to One Health and Sustainability.

  1. Students explain how physical, environmental, social and behavioural determinants are related to the concept of One Health and affect health’s sustainability.

The health of a society is determined by many determinants; medical determinants are only a small part of this. Students need to understand these determinants and their interrelationships to effectively change the health of a society. Students need to understand the different concepts and definitions of health.
The concept One Health recognises that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider environment and systems are inextricably linked and interdependent as they share not only the same environment, but also many diseases. Students need to understand the concept of One Health to make the link between sustainability and population health.
