Description
Since the demise of President Suharto in 1998, Indonesia has made significant steps towards more rule of law and democracy. Human rights have been introduced, a constitutional court has been established, Indonesians now directly elect their president and a sweeping programme of decentralisation has been implemented.
In spite of these positive achievements, the country faces serious difficulties in making the new system work. In this context it has to deal with its history of colonial and authoritarian rule, corruption, the heritage of legal pluralism and the rising influence of Islam. These issues are far from unique to Indonesia, and the materials taught in the course are therefore also useful to those who do not take a special interest in this country.
The course discusses the evolution of Indonesian law and governance since colonial times. At the end of the course students will have gained both a theoretical understanding of the problems and challenges faced by the Indonesian legal system, and a basic knowledge of Indonesian constitutional, administrative, civil, and criminal law.
Students are expected to prepare well for classes, which combine lecturing, student presentations, class discussions and assignments.

Areas to be tested within the exam: – The examination syllabus consists of the required reading (literature) for the course, the course information guide and the subjects taught in the lectures, the seminars and all other instructions which are part of the course.
Course requirements
This course is suitable for 2nd and 3rd year students in Law, Social Sciences, Public Administration, History, Arts. Non-Law students should be willing to familiarise themselves with the outlines of law.
