Mental techniques are of great importance in a number of religious traditions around the world, nowhere more so than in South Asia, in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. This course explores meditation in these traditions, what it is, how it is understood to work, what worldview(s) it assumes, and what it is claimed to be able to achieve. The course will function as a seminar (werkcollege) with readings of primary sources in translation and secondary sources, in English. The course requirements include regular attendance and informed participation. A paper will be written at the end.
