Course objectives

Students of this course learn about:

  • Major current approaches to language universals and typology;

  • Typological parameters relating to word order, argument structure and its morphosyntactic representation, causative constructions, and relative clauses;

  • Diachronic dimensions in typology as discussed in research on contact-induced typological change and the use of typology in language reconstruction

  • Typological research and generalizations in generative morpho-syntax.

Required reading

  • The textbook for this course is Comrie’s 1989 book Language Universals and Linguistic Typology (2nd edition).

  • More recent developments in typology are discussed using some additional readings.

  • Guest lectures on specific topics are given by Azeb Amha, Lisa Cheng, Rint Sybesma, Arie Verhagen, and Søren Wichmann.

Examination

Students practise typological analysis and argumentation in homework assignments and a short final paper.
