Course objectives
Students of this course learn about:
Major current approaches to language universals and typology;
Typological parameters relating to word order, argument structure and its morphosyntactic representation, causative constructions, and relative clauses;
Diachronic dimensions in typology as discussed in research on contact-induced typological change and the use of typology in language reconstruction
Typological research and generalizations in generative morpho-syntax.
Required reading
The textbook for this course is Comrie’s 1989 book Language Universals and Linguistic Typology (2nd edition).
More recent developments in typology are discussed using some additional readings.
Guest lectures on specific topics are given by Azeb Amha, Lisa Cheng, Rint Sybesma, Arie Verhagen, and Søren Wichmann.
Examination
Students practise typological analysis and argumentation in homework assignments and a short final paper.
