This course will deal with the sociolinguistic situation of Italy and the use of Italian. The first part of the course will examine the use of Italian according to the level of instruction and social class of the speaker and of the media through which the language is conveyed. The second part will examine the regional language variation in Italy. The students will familiarize with the concept of Italian dialect and will get to know the salient features which characterize the main Italian dialectal areas. Some attention will also be devoted to the minority languages of Italy.
