Description
This course will explore a contemporary form of crisis: Terrorism. The course focuses on various explanations of the motivations and behaviors of terrorist movements, groups and their members. The understanding of terrorist motivations and behaviors serves as a basis for assessing and evaluating appropriate counterterrorism measures. This course will draw heavily from historical and current examples of international and domestic terrorist groups around the world.

Course specific goals. By the end of the course, students will have developed:
· An understanding of the various theoretical perspectives on terrorist motivation and behavior;
· Knowledge of the structural, social, and psychological causes of terrorism;
· Knowledge of the structure and representation of terrorist ideology and its relation to violence;
· An understanding of the historical background of various terrorist groups; Knowledge of the structure, decision-making, and tactics of terrorist organizations;
· An understanding of governmental responses to terrorism; and insight into the conditions under which terrorism ends.

CSM related goals. Generally, the course seeks to contribute to
· General academic, analytical knowledge and skills
· Skills in social scientific research.
· The course also orients participants on the content and foundations of national and international bodies involved in counterterrorism and security management.
