Description
In this internship the student will perform a research project in the field of vitality and ageing. In order to achieve the objectives, the student familiarises him/herself with the existing knowledge in the field to which the research or policy question pertains. He/she carries out individual research in order to obtain answers to the questions and participates as a member of the team of the department (university or organisation), also in consultations and in work discussions.
Course objectives
The student:
is able to apply qualitative and quantitative research methods
is able to draw up a scientific hypothesis, design and write a scientifically sound research plan and to evaluate this plan using peer review of fellow students and/or researchers
is able to acquire knowledge and understanding independently and efficiently for the purpose of his/her own research, clinical work or health care analyses through independent study of specialist literature written in English
is able to work on new insights and to develop novel approaches
is able and aware of the necessity to keep abreast of relevant developments in the field, and is able to assess where and in which way he/she can contribute to this field
is able to clearly articulate and layout his/her own research findings, (clinical) ideas or health care policy analysis with well-thought through arguments
is able to reflect on his/her own actions as well as on the actions of others from an international perspective, and to assimilate the judgments of students or colleagues from other backgrounds to improve his/her own work;
is able to formulate judgments based on incomplete or limited information (for older patients) while taking into account the social and ethical responsibilities related to the application of his/her own knowledge and judgments

Assessment method
Final assessment: the student is assessed on the following aspects:
Project activities (knowledge, skills, independence, originality, scientific quality, social skills, motivation) as summarised in final assessment form
Thesis: written report (scientific content; scientific writing skills)
Thesis talks: oral presentation for the department (content/structure, presentation skills), and for a lay audience (graduation ceremony)
Interim assessment: 6 weeks after the course has started, the supervisor fills in the interim assessment form and discusses this with the student. The interim assessment form is based on the final form, and discusses the project activities. Together the supervisor and student define the students’ strong points and points for improvement.
The individual interim assessments will be discussed within the group of master-students during a 2-hour session, and with the coordinator of the master thesis.
