Academic Skills 1: Text Interpretation

In the first year undergraduate courses (1) Text Interpretation, (2) Argumentation, (3) Book Review, and (4) Critical Review, students practice a cumulative series of academic skills that are essential to social scientific study and research. These skills will form the foundation of students’ studies throughout the International Relations and Organization program.

Course objectives

Students who complete the course successfully should gain a better understanding of:

  • The core elements comprising scientific research articles in the fields of political science and international relations;

  • How to interpret and assess a scientific text.

Students who complete the course successfully should improve their ability to:

  • Identify and relate the core elements comprising scientific research articles in the fields of political science and international relations.

  • Write a summary of an article or book chapter in which all the core elements of a scientific text are identified;

  • Create a profile of a scientific journal in the field of political science.

  • Find literature.

  • Make correct references to literature (i.e., citations).
