Description
Why do some adolescents display criminal behavior? What personal and environmental factors contribute to a higher risk for juvenile delinquency? How can we predict high risk in children? What can we do to prevent criminal behavior, and what repression policies are effective?
In this course, scholars, lawyers and youth workers share their academic insights and personal experiences with juvenile delinquency. You will design a short intervention programme together with fellow students on the basis of the lectures and recent literature.
Course objectives
After successful completion of this course, you will:
Be aware of risk factors for developing criminal behaviour in adolescents
Be acquainted with juvenile delinquency prevention and repression programmes
Be informed about the daily reality of juvenile delinquents
Be able to design an intervention programme that is feasible, effective and innovative and aimed at prevention or repression of juvenile delinquency, or at rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents
Mode of instruction
In four interactive lectures, experts in the field of juvenile delinquency provide the necessary input for you to design an intervention programme. You and your peers present this intervention in the final session.

After the presentation, you hand in the intervention programme on Blackboard. The course coordinator assesses your intervention on a) feasibility, b) effectiveness and c) innovativeness.
