Description

Activities in cyberspace always have a legal dimension. This entails that a comprehensive understanding of cyber security issues requires basic knowledge and understanding of how legal rights and constraints currently operate in cyberspace, and where necessary, how legal regulation can be implemented so that core human values may flourish in the digital domain. This includes (1) basic knowledge of the functions of law and its institutional arrangements within Dutch society, in the EU and on a global scale; (2) basic knowledge of the national and international legal systems involved in cyber security issues; (3) knowledge of the legal frameworks and key provisions with respect to core themes such as privacy/data protection and cybercrime; (4) basic knowledge of the legal frameworks and key provisions with respect to relevant themes such as information security and trusted third parties; and (5) a firm understanding of the intricacies of balancing different, potentially clashing interests such as freedom of information (including the right to open data) and the right to privacy as these arise in the global sphere of cyberspace.

Course objectives

Participants have:

  • Knowledge of the structure and branches of law, its methodology, sources and history;

  • Knowledge of the different themes that warrant legal attention or a legal response in relation to cybersecurity, e.g. privacy and data protection, cybercrime, protecting critical infrastructures etc.;

  • Advanced knowledge of the existing legal frameworks (national, EU and/or international) related to privacy and data protection and cybercrime;

  • Knowledge of the existing legal frameworks (national, EU and/or international) related to trust services and network security.

Assessment method

Written exam

  • 100% of final grade

  • Grade must be 5.50 or higher to pass the course

  • Re-sit of a fail is possible.

  • Re-sit will take the same form

Reading list

Compulsory literature and literature for further consultation will be announced via Brightspace.

Registration

No registration is required for lectures and exams.
